HIV Testing in the Philippines – What you need to know and what you must know.

HIV Testing in the Philippines – How to get tested.

The Department of Health now ranks Philippines as one of the countries that has the fastest growing HIV epidemic in the world with a prevalence rate of 5% nationwide. There is a 20-25% prevalence rate in Metro Manila and 15-20% prevalence rate in Cebu. This rate dwarfed the prevalence rate in South Africa, which has the largest population of HIV positive individuals in the world, with a mere 4.7%. Prevalence rate refers to the percentage of individual affected by the disease at specific time. With that in mind, we can say that right now, in a population of 110 Million Filipinos, there are 5.5 Million individuals currently living with HIV.

Mere 5 years ago when I started making this blog, The Philippines is a low prevalence country with less than 1% of the population affected by HIV. This rapidly growing epidemic if left uncontrolled will eventually make The Philippines at par with South Africa with 1 out 10 individuals affected with HIV. So what went wrong? As a nurse with 15 years experience handling HIV cases and working actively with HIV positive individuals, here are my personal conclusions, do take note that this conclusions are not even close with the official conclusion of the Department of Health on why HIV became a rapidly growing epidemic in The Philippines. I personally think that their conclusion is too traditional and not in touch with the modern activities of our youth.

  1. DOH says that the resistance of the Church to some forms of birth control is a contributing factor on the HIV epidemic right now. I say that HIV is most commonly seen in the young population. A population that makes their own decision and is rebellious to the church teachings. Though the Church could have cause some sort of contribution, I do believe that the lack of sex education in our school particularly to our youth is a more blameable culprit than the Church. Did you know that people ages 14 to 30 makes up the 95% of newly diagnosed HIV cases each month and the median age of affected individual for the last 5 years is just 28 years old?
  2. DOH says prostitution or sex for money is a contributing factor of the epidemic and should be eradicated. I say that, prostitution cannot be eradicated. Since the dawn of human civilization, there is prostitution and it is something that is very hard to control much less eradicated from our society. What DOH can do is to provide an ID system and free monthly checkup to our sex workers to protect them as well as the people that they serve. This will also encourage the client to only have sex with a “clean” sex worker. This will also further educate our sex workers on proper ways of protecting themselves from different sexually transmitted infection as well as unwanted pregnancy.
  3. DOH says that persons under 18 who wants to test for HIV should require parental consent. I say that, I have clients with HIV at age 13, 14, 15… and that is because of failure in health promotion. The accessibility of casual sex thru apps like Grindr and other dating apps makes it very easy for 2 complete strangers to have sex consensually and thus, spreading the virus like wildfire to our young and techie population. These individuals would never dare to ask their parents permission to go with them and get tested, our culture against premarital sex and our bigotry against the LGBT makes it impossible to do so. HIV testing should be accessible to ANYONE at ANY AGE on their own volition.

It is estimated that there 1,000 reported HIV cases per month since the 6 months of 2016. At that rate, we can assume that there are 30 to 50 reported HIV cases daily. This does not include unreported cases. Unreported cases are HIV positive individuals who do not know they are infected. The epidemic growth rate is about 200% per year. This means that if not controlled, we could see a tenfold growth of HIV cases (300-500 cases per day) within the next 10 years.

One of the most important thing to do to prevent transmission is knowing your status. HIV is a very controllable disease as long as it is detected early and has not yet done major damage to your organs most specially the Liver, Kidneys and the Brain. There are many ways of getting tested for HIV in the Philippines. We will discuss each of them, one by one including their advantages and disadvantages.

I. Hospitals

Testing by going to hospitals is one of the most common means of getting tested. There are 5 hospitals in our country that specializes with HIV counseling and testing as well as referrals in case you tested positive and needing further treatment. In no particular order: RITM, San Lazaro Hospital, St. Lukes Medical Center both in Quezon City and Global, Makati Medical Center and Medical City in Ortigas. Do take note that the cost for HIV testing is around 1,100 to 3,800 in the private hospitals I mentioned.

PROS: If done correctly, results are very accurate. This is also the only results acknowledged in various employment and immigration requirements.

CONS: There is always an issue with regards to privacy and confidentiality getting tested  in any hospital. Though privacy is protected by our health care professionals, there are many incidents of information leakage caused by poor protocol with regards to transfer of information such as students getting free access to medical records without permission or a slip of tongue during a conversation of one of the member of the health care team handling the HIV case. Hacking is another risk when it comes to electronically stored medical information and records of medication being dispensed from the Pharmacy and to whom.

When it comes to public hospitals, though uncommon, there are recorded cases of results being switched between patients. It is not unheard of that a certain person tested positive though in reality, he is negative simply because a specimen sample was incorrectly labeled with his name. Lapse in judgment and concentration of our overworked and underpaid medical professionals is the main culprit in most cases.

II. Free tests done by Volunteer groups

HIV Test Philippines
We have friendly, volunteer groups that do testing for free. You can call them and schedule a visit and let them know that you are interested in getting tested.

#1850 Leon Guinto Street, Malate, Manila.
Contact: 353-8922

Unit 5, 3/F, Anglo Building, #715-A Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City.
Contact: 0915-366-5683

PROS: Free and they offer counselling as well. Staff are very friendly, professional and trained.

CONS: Privacy and result confidentiality are concerns when it comes to free and public testing. Though trained, innocent conversations could lead to information leakage both consciously and unconsciously. There are cases wherein a Volunteer saw a recently positive patient in the mall and told his friend that “That guys just tested positive yesterday.”

III. HIV testing kits

HIV Testing in The Philippines Home Kit

Advanced home test kits like Fujibio HIV kit has 99.9% accuracy similar to that of Hospital based testing.

Testing kits are widely used as the main method in HIV detection in some hospitals and hygiene clinic. All free testing done by volunteer groups uses HIV test kits. HIV testing hubs also uses HIV kits. Medical missions and workplace testing will usually use HIV testing kits. They are easy to use with result at 99.9% accuracy seen in mere 10 minutes. The common brands in The Philippines are Fujibio and SD Bio. Fujibio is Japanese made while SD Bio is Korean made. Both should give an accurate result with 99.9% certainty similar to that of hospital based testing. Only Fujibio HIV test kits are the only one you can buy online.

PROS: Very easy to use and results are very accurate. I would personally recommend testing using test kits first as to give you an accurate idea of your status before going to the hospital. That way, you will know that you will test negative or positive in advance privately. It is also very convenient and you are assure that only you will know the result. Fujibio hiv test kits being sold online also offers free counseling.

CONS: Since the person that bought the kit will usually test himself or herself, Anxiety could lead to testing delay. Some people will contemplate for weeks before using the test kits and then eventually forgets that he bought one.

A positive HIV test using an HIV Home Test Kit

If you used any of my recommendations above in getting tested and you tested positive, DO NOT DESPAIR. HIV is a very controllable disease and achievement of undetectable viral load is the treatment goal. Living a normal life is very possible with HIV as long as treatment is started and adherence to the treatment regimen is established. We have 2 options in getting treated.

Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM)

RITM is the premiere and the leading facility in The Philippines when it comes to antiretroviral drug distribution as well as treatment for HIV patients. This should be your first choice in obtaining confirmatory results and further treatment if the initial testing result was positive. RITM is more specialized than San Lazaro and could deal with serious HIV related complications such as Mycobacterium Bovis infection as well as cryptococcal infection of the brain.

For commuters:

  1. Take a bus or van going to Alabang.
  2. Look for the Muntinlupa Fire Station.
  3. Ride a UV express/van or a multicab with a Filinvest Ikot route in front of the Orange Building and Festival Mall just besides the fire station.
  4. Tell the driver to drop you off at RITM.

Total estimated fare cost: 60 -120 Pesos.
For private vehicles:

  1. Proceed to SLEX.
  2. Exit at Filinvest.
  3. Turn left after the toll gate.
  4. RITM is just at the right side.

  1. Ensure that you arrive before 7:00 A.M for baseline testing. You will not be entertained if you arrive late.
  2. Once inside, simply proceed to the ARG clinic.
  3. Register.
  4. Proceed to the cashier and pay 150 pesos for the orange patient sheet.
  5. Proceed to ARG and await for your name to be called.
  6. CD4 testing for positive patients are available after 1:00 P.M except during Wednesdays and weekends.
  7. Distribution of antiretroviral drugs are given monthly. Maximum supply for 1 month is dispensed at the given schedule.
  8. Drugs should be free and is subsidized by Philhealth.

The Thai Red Cross Research Center

If you have the budget of about 25,000 pesos every 6 months, a possible alternative is getting tested and treated in Thailand. The Thai Red Cross Aids Research Center is one of the most advanced HIV treatment facility in the world eclipsing RITM. They use the most advanced drugs that you need to only take once a day as compared to a cocktail of 2-3 medications that the Philippines still uses. Blood works such as CD4 testing is around 500 pesos and results are ready in 3 days. The medications used in TRCARC are the best medications available and is very cheap, it will only cost you about 10,000 pesos for your 6 months supply. This same medication costs about 80,000 per 1 month supply in the United States. It is cheaper in Thailand because it is subsidized by the Thai Government. You can only purchase 6 month supply of the drug as they will require you to come back every 6 months for monitoring your health status. This advanced medication is only taken once a day and has very little side effects. They look like Centrum tablets.

  1. Mitch & Fitch says:

At 27⁰C to 37⁰C, the HIV can survive for up to 7 days in syringes (fresh blood)

At room temperature, the HIV can survive in dried blood for 5 to 6 days.

At 4⁰C, HIV can survive up to 7 days in dried blood

At -70⁰C, HIV can survive indefinitely without any loss of viral activity – this is the temperature that HIV-infected blood is stored at in laboratory experiments for future testing.

Kahit isang beses lang sya tapos kahit ilang seconds lang yan nakapasok..still you are atrisk….
With regards sa sintomas mo…i myself experienced a lot of symptoms pero as what all the groups for hiv advice na dont rely on symptoms..ONLY A TEST CAN TELL KING INFECTED KA OR NOT…PAtest nalng para mawala na ung kaba…sakali man positve ka..u need to accept it kase hibdi karin nagingat…dasal lang…patest ka muna bago ka magisip ng kubg ano2 jan.

  2. Lily112 says:

Hi po sir Llyod or sino man po maka reply. Anyone pls answer… need help here pls.. so paranoid, parang yung symptoms nararamdaman ko na.. huhuhu

  3. Mavi says:

    • Lloyd says:

Yan ang window period na dapat mong malampasan baho ka magpatest..let say ang bery last sex exposure mo lalo na unprotected is Nov….Feb pa ang conclusive result nya altjough you can get tested at 6 weeks basta ulitin mo lng sya lampas ng 3 months or even better at 6 months para wala kana alinlangan pa….punta ka nearest testing hub loke loveyourself kung sa manila ka or you order test kit at…hindi ako nagbebenta nyan ha.

      • Dom says:

Nakakaworry☹

  4. Dom says:

  5. Dom says:

OMG.

  6. Ryan Gem says:

Hi. Legit po ba ang Fujibio, kasi nagpurchase ako nyan and nagtest on the 8th week, 10th week and 12th week. All are negative. Nakamove on na sana ako. Kasi may nabasa akong article, eto yung statement “Public Health Warning Against the Purchase and Use of Unregistered In-Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices (Fujibio HIV Test Kit and Diagnose Pregnancy Test Kit) ” here’s the link

  7. H.Angel says:

medyo na disappoint lang ako kasi nag test ako sa isang prestigious hospital last January 14 then after 2-3 days i am “NEGATIVE” raw, the test result was 0.35 and thus, negative.

then, i used Fujibio around January 13, and I was positive.. that is the reason why nag pa test ako dito sa “prestigious” hospital in the first place to confirm the result.

I am very confused talaga, so i did a confirmatory sa RITM alabang using western blot and i shared to them na nag + ako sa kit pero negative sa another screening and guess what, positive talaga ako.

I am thinking of filing a complaint but it was said to me that not all tests are 100% accurate that is why may confirmatory.

anyhow, i think i just need to let it go and focus on my health now that I am sure I am positive. I am already starting my treatment as 3 days ago. My result:

    • John8820 says:

Hi po, I am sorry to hear na nag positive ka. Laban lang po. Marami pong tutulong sa inyo if ever po kailangan nyo someone to cheer up. Everyone deserve to be love. God is with us all the time..

    • Lloyd says:

So it means na mas nadetect pa ng fujibio ang virus kesa sa prestigious hospitals na yan?Un nga kase sinsabi ko na madami tlaga nagpositive sa fujibio kit na yan…imahine sa hospital NR ka tapos sa kit R ka… im starting to think kung dapat ba ako magtiwala sa hospitals..meron dito one of the readers na he strongly recommends sa hospital kase machine daw ang gamit..tsk…tapos ngayon baliktad namn s akot ka positove pero s ahospital negative ka…sana inulet ng hospital baka nagkamali lang ung magperform ng test mo…WALA SA AYOS!Im sorry to jear your pozzie..Goodluck and Godbless.

      • artur16 says:

Reliable naman sguro ung test nila no??

    • Marx says:

God bless…

    • Veepee says:

Hi, matanong ko lang. ilang araw or weeks ka from exposure nung nag test ka sa fujibio? Nagbibilang pa tin kasi ako ng araw before yung 90 days mark ko. Iniisip ko magtesting na ulet para alam ko na if positive or nrgative although I’m sure di pa rin ako matatahik. Just like to know how sensitive yung test kit, Thanks and may god give you strength sa pagharap sa sakit.

        • Lloyd says:

Lahat namn namamaos..hindi lang hiv ang sakit ng tao..kaht ako sinipon..inubo and till now namamaos parin…negative nman ako.

    • kon says:

3rd gen. before you head out, know about the window period and your risk level.
telling your symptoms won’t help either, only a test will tell.

go to page 118 and read my post and Lloyd’s. good luck.

  12. Ram says:

          • kon says:

nagtataka ko bakit naitanong mo pa dito ang tungkol sa 3 months window period kasi sabi mo may counseling ka sa last test mo? standard ang 3 months na yan and backed by science.

any result after 3 months is 100% reliable. if people are reading this and won’t believe otherwise, then GTFO of this message board and go somewhere else for PROFESSIONAL help.

After sex, di agad madedect kung may HIV kana… di naman yan instant… after 6 weeks (using Fujibio) baka madetect na yan… after 3 months ng last sex (risky exposure) mo, sure na yan madetect if nka kuha ka ng HIV or hindi…

I’m not a sales agent of Fujibio ha… Kon would recommend testing at testing centers… but Fujibio ung sure ako na pwede na madetect (95%) if nka kuha ka ng HIV after 6 weeks since last risky exposure…

    • kon says:

DO IT THEN. DO IT ASAP. Look, I’m not going to criticize what you did PERO–
Stop with all these drama and get yourself and your GF tested.

hindi po ako galit hehe 😊

guys– kahit gaanong kahaba ang ilista nyong “symptoms” me and others who are helping here are on “tldr” mode. wala yan sa symptoms, ONLY A TEST WILL TELL. Goodluck.

the results you got on 2 months is almost good but the standard here is still 3 months btw.

    • Arbin says:

Na until now after 1mos. Possible exposure.

  27. BoysNightOut says:

Ask ko lang po. Nag boys night out kame.

    • kon says:

you had protected sex so your risk is almost zero. unless may iba ka pang exposure bago yan.

if nahihiya ka, go to a private hospital or order the fujibio kit (i don’t advise using fujibio though, not because of the accuracy pero ung counseling)

stop with your excuses and take control of your health. get tested and consult a doctor. good luck.
any more BUTS will be ignored.

  28. Christian says:

  29. Vj says:

  31. Jd says:

Hello sir Lloyd please answer me po salamat..

  32. rey mart says:

sir/ma’am good noon, safe po ba na last sex ko without using condom is 3month then after nakapagtalik na ako sa bago kong gf… ok po ba yon? safe po ba yon? ano po ba yong standard na ok na makipag sex sa bago sa last use po?

    • Lloyd says:

Dko gets sir….i meed full details..wag po tayo text message na shortcut ok..relaks..kwento mo including dates at kung ano ng hakbang ginawa mo.

      • rey mart says:

i had my last sex with my ex 3months ago, without using condom or anything… at pagkalipas ng 3buwan meron na akong bagong gf at nagtalik na din kami at wala din gamit na condom… at yong tanong po is safe na po ba yong 3months gap?

        • rey mart says:

and to this new gf ko po, everytime we kiss magkakaroon po ako ng mouthsore which makes me worried so much kasi masakit siya, and then kinabahan ako kasi one of the symptoms na yata to.. in my perception magkakaroon lng ako ng mouthsore pag hindi ako maka toothbrush ng maayos or i don’t know po talaga.

        • rey mart says:

yong 3months in relationship namin ng ex ko is nagsimula sa March hanggang May, 2018, pero active kami sobra sa month of March, tapos d na kami masyado nagkita2 ng ex ko.. tapos nag start na ako ng new gf ko in the month of september 2018.

          • Lloyd says:

The problem is hindi nyo alam status nyo both tapos unprotected sex pa…what osa sa inyo positive pala…kahit taon na nakalipas king positive…positove tlaga…hindi namn nawawala ang hiv kung papalipasin mo lang dpat may gamot para maging undetectable ka sa viral load mo at don kana pwede makopagsex without condom but i still recommend to always use condom no matter what.
Magpatest ka nalang muna 3 months after kayo maglast kantutan….test lang ang makapagsasabi kung meron ka or walang hiv.

          • rey mart says:

natanong ko po sa ex ko na wala daw siyang HIV (ex ko is japanese she is 19 years old) and im 25 yong current ko naman is wala din.. kasi nag search din ako sa google na magkakaroon ka ng mouthsore sa pagkikiss dahil nagsheshare din kasi ng bacteria…

          • rey mart says:

this current gf ko po is her first time… pro ayon nga problema ko lang po na bakit palage ako nagkakaroon ng mouthsore tapos madami pa yong mouthsore ko.

          • rey mart says:

            sir please rply.

  33. rey mart says:

  34. Greg says:

Had sex but no penetration naman…sya lng po yung ng blow..when he was done, ginamit nya yun na lubricant then masturbates usual may irritation pg nasobrahan kakakiskis…may possible transmission po ba incase na hiv positive sya though sabi nya ay di namn daw po.. we kissed as well.thanks po..

  35. much0 says:

  36. Kayla says:

  37. Worry says:

A year ago i had sex with a co worker.. 3 weeks after nagkaron ako ng flu..
Pero yung result ko is hanggang ngayon after a year negative parin..
Reliable ba yung test sa lab? I mean accurate ba sila? Sa High precision ako nagpatest. Thanks.

Tas pala may nabanggit coworker ko nung minsan kasi andami niya rashes tas sabi ko anong gamot pjnapainom sayo ng tita mong doctor,
Sabi niya ART something like that dko naman alam ano yun..

    • Lloyd says:

Or after nong sex na un naging paranoid kana???same as me before kaya kung ano2 tumutubo….relaks your mind at mawawala yan lahat or consult an infectious disease doctor baka may fungal infection or disease ka at need mo uminom ng gamot specifically para jan…kahit ano pa sintomas tumutuno sayo basta ang test mo ay NEGATIVE..u are indeed hiv negative…ibnag sakit yan..pacheck up ka…mista ung nakasex mo?negative din ba?Art is antiretroviral..hinagamit ng mga hiv patient yan or some yata nirereseta ng ibang doctor like kung may herpes zoster ka.Ask mo sya ano sakit mya baka may shingles sya which is cause by weakened immuned sytem.

    • Lloyd says:

Block spot karamihan jan sipilis…pacheck mo

  38. Iwan says:

  39. Iwan says:

  40. Lloyd says:

  41. Nimu says:

May sintomas ata ako sir lloyd may plema ako sa lalamunan pro hindi nmN masakit maglunok kahit laway.. Or dala lng kaya ito ng anxiety sir lloyd?

    • Lloyd says:

  42. Lissy says:

Guys ask ko lang po consider as conclusive na po na yung 32 days last exposure ko nagpa test ak a st lukes. Using 4th gen and ang result is NON REACTIVE.

    • Lloyd says:

May pre and post counselling ang st lukes but why dont you ask the councel about your concern..mas may karapatan at alam sila kesa sakin or samin dito maliban sana sa admin na nurse ng ritm ang kaso she or he never answered anymore.

    • worriednomore says:

hello. galing din ako ng st lukes last jan 2 tapos 31 days from possible exposure. the doc said the test is more than 95% reliable at 28 days. dapat sinabi yan sayo sa counseling. advise sakin magpatest nalang ulit ng 3 months kahit may off the record advise sakin na hindi na magbago yung results kahit 3 months na repeat.

  43. Krissa says:

Hello po ask ko lang po kasi i got test tested sa st lukes via anti gen and antibodies test.. 4th gen po yata tawag nila dun ask ko lang po how accurate 4th sa 1 month possible exposure.. i know ang conclusive po is 3 mos but ask ko lang po if gaano kalaki ang chance na accurate na sya in 1 month thru 4th gen.. by the way the result po is non reactive.

  44. Mar14 says:

Hi po. 2years pa po expecting exposure ko. Last nov. 2018 naka dalawang rapid test kit ako parehas negative. Tapos nagpatest ako Dec. 2018 sa BULACAN DAIGNOTICS CENTER non-reactive. Tapos po hospital jan. 2019 may kasamang counselling tapos free pa po. Non-reactive ulit.

    • kon says:

you are HIV-free and stop unnecessary worrying. Any results after 3 months is 100% reliable. Move on with your life. Sinabi dapat yan sa counseling mo.

Geez, I said I will be leaving this site for a break and I still keep seeing these kind of questions. I hope the education about HIV in the country catches up. see you guys next time and good luck!

      • Lloyd says:

        Hajahha..helo kon..same here.

      • Mar14 says:

Thank you sir. Well thank you again sir.

        • kon says:

baka kelangan mo na ng professional help to deal with your anxiety.

go on a vacation or do some hobbies, i would suggest.

  45. jem says:

    • jem says:

pa advice po mga sir pleasee

      • Lloyd says:

To be honest..I hate you doing anal mo tapos ipapasok sa pepe..asyadong kadiro un pero i wont judge you.Get tested now para mapanatag loob nyo. Next time wag nyo na ulitin yamg kadiring sex act. Respect each other especially your gf or fitire wife.Goodluck

        • jem says:

          • Lloyd says:

Kung wala nman kayo ibang nakasex at natagal na naging kau why wait for 3 months kung kayo lang namn dalawa….ung 3 months applicable lang yan sa status na hibdi nyo alam or bago lang kau or one stand…kung isa sa inyo positoive since more than a yr na ung last experience or exposure nyo sa pwede na kahit kelan…no need to wait for 3 months..ang aalamin natin king meron ba sa inyo or wala…sabi mo naging kau matagal na at wala na kau nakasex na the result would be conclusive kung ano man maging resulta nyan.

  46. Nimu says:

Hindi pa ako nkapagtest sir lloyd kc wla pa 3mos.. Nxt month pa mag 3mos from last expsure ko na protected sex using condom.. Sobrang paranoid na ako..

    • Lloyd says:

Pero matagal kana nagbabasa dito db?

      • Nimu says:

Dis month lng po ako nagbabasa dito sir lloyd kaya nabasa ko na from page 1 up to 30 ata saka page 80 to 119..nagkaroon ako ng anxiety kaya ako nagbabasa dito its too late ata pra ma educate at nangyari na ang hindi dapat..😭

        • Nimu says:

In my case sir lloyd protected sex nman ung exposure ko at intact ung condom pagkatapos ng sex namin..

          • Lloyd says:

Protected namn pala at wala kana previous encounter..wala kana dapat ikabahala…om sure nman na kahit 3 months after NR yan…madami ka din mababasa dito na nakakabahala pero only you and your test can confirm.
In your case kung wala nman blowjob walang risk yan..intact nman ang condom kamo.
But for peace of mind magoatest ka nalng tapos tigilan mona kakabasa sa mga outdated facts ng ibang site kase iba jan 1990s pa.
            Goodluck and Godbless!

          • Nimu says:

Salamat sir lloyd only viganal sex with condom.. Medyo may takot din magpatest..😭

          • Nimu says:

    • kon says:

hey. kung umabot ka ng page 119 im pretty sure nabasa mo na SYMPTOMS ARE NOT USED DIAGNOSE HIV.

You had safe sex and you have virtually ZERO risk of contracting HIV.

wag mo na antayin ang 3 months. Go tested NOW. Result at 8 weeks is already reliable. Good luck.
