HIV Testing in the Philippines – What you need to know and what you must know.

HIV Testing in the Philippines – How to get tested.

The Department of Health now ranks Philippines as one of the countries that has the fastest growing HIV epidemic in the world with a prevalence rate of 5% nationwide. There is a 20-25% prevalence rate in Metro Manila and 15-20% prevalence rate in Cebu. This rate dwarfed the prevalence rate in South Africa, which has the largest population of HIV positive individuals in the world, with a mere 4.7%. Prevalence rate refers to the percentage of individual affected by the disease at specific time. With that in mind, we can say that right now, in a population of 110 Million Filipinos, there are 5.5 Million individuals currently living with HIV.

Mere 5 years ago when I started making this blog, The Philippines is a low prevalence country with less than 1% of the population affected by HIV. This rapidly growing epidemic if left uncontrolled will eventually make The Philippines at par with South Africa with 1 out 10 individuals affected with HIV. So what went wrong? As a nurse with 15 years experience handling HIV cases and working actively with HIV positive individuals, here are my personal conclusions, do take note that this conclusions are not even close with the official conclusion of the Department of Health on why HIV became a rapidly growing epidemic in The Philippines. I personally think that their conclusion is too traditional and not in touch with the modern activities of our youth.

  1. DOH says that the resistance of the Church to some forms of birth control is a contributing factor on the HIV epidemic right now. I say that HIV is most commonly seen in the young population. A population that makes their own decision and is rebellious to the church teachings. Though the Church could have cause some sort of contribution, I do believe that the lack of sex education in our school particularly to our youth is a more blameable culprit than the Church. Did you know that people ages 14 to 30 makes up the 95% of newly diagnosed HIV cases each month and the median age of affected individual for the last 5 years is just 28 years old?
  2. DOH says prostitution or sex for money is a contributing factor of the epidemic and should be eradicated. I say that, prostitution cannot be eradicated. Since the dawn of human civilization, there is prostitution and it is something that is very hard to control much less eradicated from our society. What DOH can do is to provide an ID system and free monthly checkup to our sex workers to protect them as well as the people that they serve. This will also encourage the client to only have sex with a “clean” sex worker. This will also further educate our sex workers on proper ways of protecting themselves from different sexually transmitted infection as well as unwanted pregnancy.
  3. DOH says that persons under 18 who wants to test for HIV should require parental consent. I say that, I have clients with HIV at age 13, 14, 15… and that is because of failure in health promotion. The accessibility of casual sex thru apps like Grindr and other dating apps makes it very easy for 2 complete strangers to have sex consensually and thus, spreading the virus like wildfire to our young and techie population. These individuals would never dare to ask their parents permission to go with them and get tested, our culture against premarital sex and our bigotry against the LGBT makes it impossible to do so. HIV testing should be accessible to ANYONE at ANY AGE on their own volition.

THE CURRENT STATISTICS (2017)

It is estimated that there 1,000 reported HIV cases per month since the 6 months of 2016. At that rate, we can assume that there are 30 to 50 reported HIV cases daily. This does not include unreported cases. Unreported cases are HIV positive individuals who do not know they are infected. The epidemic growth rate is about 200% per year. This means that if not controlled, we could see a tenfold growth of HIV cases (300-500 cases per day) within the next 10 years.

HOW TO GET TESTED: HIV TESTING IN THE PHILIPPINES

One of the most important thing to do to prevent transmission is knowing your status. HIV is a very controllable disease as long as it is detected early and has not yet done major damage to your organs most specially the Liver, Kidneys and the Brain. There are many ways of getting tested for HIV in the Philippines. We will discuss each of them, one by one including their advantages and disadvantages.

I. Hospitals

Testing by going to hospitals is one of the most common means of getting tested. There are 5 hospitals in our country that specializes with HIV counseling and testing as well as referrals in case you tested positive and needing further treatment. In no particular order: RITM, San Lazaro Hospital, St. Lukes Medical Center both in Quezon City and Global, Makati Medical Center and Medical City in Ortigas. Do take note that the cost for HIV testing is around 1,100 to 3,800 in the private hospitals I mentioned.

PROS: If done correctly, results are very accurate. This is also the only results acknowledged in various employment and immigration requirements.

CONS: There is always an issue with regards to privacy and confidentiality getting tested  in any hospital. Though privacy is protected by our health care professionals, there are many incidents of information leakage caused by poor protocol with regards to transfer of information such as students getting free access to medical records without permission or a slip of tongue during a conversation of one of the member of the health care team handling the HIV case. Hacking is another risk when it comes to electronically stored medical information and records of medication being dispensed from the Pharmacy and to whom.

When it comes to public hospitals, though uncommon, there are recorded cases of results being switched between patients. It is not unheard of that a certain person tested positive though in reality, he is negative simply because a specimen sample was incorrectly labeled with his name. Lapse in judgment and concentration of our overworked and underpaid medical professionals is the main culprit in most cases.

II. Free tests done by Volunteer groups

HIV Test Philippines
We have friendly, volunteer groups that do testing for free. You can call them and schedule a visit and let them know that you are interested in getting tested.

LOVE YOURSELF MALATE HUB
#1850 Leon Guinto Street, Malate, Manila.
Contact: 353-8922

LOVE YOURSELF ANGLO HUB
Unit 5, 3/F, Anglo Building, #715-A Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City.
Contact: 0915-366-5683

PROS: Free and they offer counselling as well. Staff are very friendly, professional and trained.

CONS: Privacy and result confidentiality are concerns when it comes to free and public testing. Though trained, innocent conversations could lead to information leakage both consciously and unconsciously. There are cases wherein a Volunteer saw a recently positive patient in the mall and told his friend that “That guys just tested positive yesterday.”

III. HIV testing kits

HIV Testing in The Philippines Home Kit

Advanced home test kits like Fujibio HIV kit has 99.9% accuracy similar to that of Hospital based testing.

Testing kits are widely used as the main method in HIV detection in some hospitals and hygiene clinic. All free testing done by volunteer groups uses HIV test kits. HIV testing hubs also uses HIV kits. Medical missions and workplace testing will usually use HIV testing kits. They are easy to use with result at 99.9% accuracy seen in mere 10 minutes. The common brands in The Philippines are Fujibio and SD Bio. Fujibio is Japanese made while SD Bio is Korean made. Both should give an accurate result with 99.9% certainty similar to that of hospital based testing. Only Fujibio HIV test kits are the only one you can buy online.

PROS: Very easy to use and results are very accurate. I would personally recommend testing using test kits first as to give you an accurate idea of your status before going to the hospital. That way, you will know that you will test negative or positive in advance privately. It is also very convenient and you are assure that only you will know the result. Fujibio hiv test kits being sold online also offers free counseling.

CONS: Since the person that bought the kit will usually test himself or herself, Anxiety could lead to testing delay. Some people will contemplate for weeks before using the test kits and then eventually forgets that he bought one.

A positive HIV test using an HIV Home Test Kit

I TESTED POSITIVE. WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?

If you used any of my recommendations above in getting tested and you tested positive, DO NOT DESPAIR. HIV is a very controllable disease and achievement of undetectable viral load is the treatment goal. Living a normal life is very possible with HIV as long as treatment is started and adherence to the treatment regimen is established. We have 2 options in getting treated.

Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM)

RITM is the premiere and the leading facility in The Philippines when it comes to antiretroviral drug distribution as well as treatment for HIV patients. This should be your first choice in obtaining confirmatory results and further treatment if the initial testing result was positive. RITM is more specialized than San Lazaro and could deal with serious HIV related complications such as Mycobacterium Bovis infection as well as cryptococcal infection of the brain.

For commuters:

  1. Take a bus or van going to Alabang.
  2. Look for the Muntinlupa Fire Station.
  3. Ride a UV express/van or a multicab with a Filinvest Ikot route in front of the Orange Building and Festival Mall just besides the fire station.
  4. Tell the driver to drop you off at RITM.

Total estimated fare cost: 60 -120 Pesos.
For private vehicles:

  1. Proceed to SLEX.
  2. Exit at Filinvest.
  3. Turn left after the toll gate.
  4. RITM is just at the right side.

Process:

  1. Ensure that you arrive before 7:00 A.M for baseline testing. You will not be entertained if you arrive late.
  2. Once inside, simply proceed to the ARG clinic.
  3. Register.
  4. Proceed to the cashier and pay 150 pesos for the orange patient sheet.
  5. Proceed to ARG and await for your name to be called.
  6. CD4 testing for positive patients are available after 1:00 P.M except during Wednesdays and weekends.
  7. Distribution of antiretroviral drugs are given monthly. Maximum supply for 1 month is dispensed at the given schedule.
  8. Drugs should be free and is subsidized by Philhealth.

The Thai Red Cross Research Center

If you have the budget of about 25,000 pesos every 6 months, a possible alternative is getting tested and treated in Thailand. The Thai Red Cross Aids Research Center is one of the most advanced HIV treatment facility in the world eclipsing RITM. They use the most advanced drugs that you need to only take once a day as compared to a cocktail of 2-3 medications that the Philippines still uses. Blood works such as CD4 testing is around 500 pesos and results are ready in 3 days. The medications used in TRCARC are the best medications available and is very cheap, it will only cost you about 10,000 pesos for your 6 months supply. This same medication costs about 80,000 per 1 month supply in the United States. It is cheaper in Thailand because it is subsidized by the Thai Government. You can only purchase 6 month supply of the drug as they will require you to come back every 6 months for monitoring your health status. This advanced medication is only taken once a day and has very little side effects. They look like Centrum tablets.

hello ms anne.. dti ng comment nrin ako dto.. pero awa ng diyos negative nmn. so un friend ko na encourage n mg pa hiv test din s hi precision 82 days aftr last exposure nya. negative nmn.. considered n po conclusive un n negative n cya? tnx

    • Anne says:

Yes po consedered na sya becoz almost 90 days na..para sure magpatest ka ulit for 3 months para a total of 6 months..if magtest ka nang 3 months the virus can detect 99.7 percent so mayroon pang natitirang 3 percent..

      • Lloyd says:

0.1% with rare cases kaya for peace of mind patest at 6 months..after all ganyan namn tlaga recommendation ng DOH sa pinas.

        • Khalil says:

No exposure for the last 6 mos.?

          • Lloyd says:

Sakin wala pa ako nakilala pero sa nababasa ko sa america namn un meron pero very2 rare kaya nga hinawa na nila conclusive ang 3 months kase sa napakaliit na percent napakalamalas mona tlaga db.Kaya nga kahit sa ibamg bansa they still recommend 6 months testing for very rare cases lalo na paranoid kana sa kakatest at wala namn makita pero meron kang sintomas….un tlaga pinapayo nila para matigil na pangungulet.

          • Lloyd says:

          • Imme says:

Pag ganun na 3 months negative ka after exposure then nag pa test ka 6 months nag positive ka. My kulang sa details na information, kasi sa uk 3months mark conclusive cla, if nag NR ka sa 3 months then nag R ka sa 6 it means my bagong exposure ka…

        • em20 says:

tama po, wla po cya exposure since 82 days n ngpa test cya.. sna nga po ung iba e wag n haluan ng ibang kwento pr malito ung iba

          • Imme says:

Pag pag nag pa test ka base line 28 days adter exposure NE then repeat k nlng 3 month para ma clear mind mo….ang ibang symtoms anxiety na yan…dapat wala kang exposure in na bago sa last possible exposure mo…

  14. Jie says:

    • Chong says:

Nakapah HIV test nadin po ako. Fujibo 1/2 test kit po last Feb 21 2019. Negative naman po result. Okay na po ba un as negqtive tlaga?

      • Jie says:

(Correct me if im wrong sa mga makakabasa.

What I mean is, parehas kaming walang HIV, but is it possible to develop an HIV for having a unprotected sex? Salamat po sa mga sasagot. Bago lang po kasi ako sa sex.

  17. Shad says:

Pwede po ba magpa-HIV Test kapag bagong tattoo? Thanks.

  18. Jhoanna marie Antolin says:

Pls saan po ba pede mag pa test for hiv na mura lng po…

  19. Bruno says:

Thanks for the answer

How risky is kissing and rimming? Is there any possible to get hiv from kissing and rimming? Thanks

    • Nel says:

No risk. Kahit magdamag pa kayo mag halikan saka sa rimming. because nakukuha lang ang std or hiv thru body fluids blood transfussion saka semilya , walang risk ang laway

    • Nel says:

pwede naman . try mo pacheck other std because other std shown after 2 weeks of exposure , pero kung ang tanong mo is for hiv . its better kung three month to have an accurate result.

  24. Lalaki says:

Pero still negative. totoo na anxiety can attack our immune system. But the better way to check you status is mag patest after 3 months of exposure. di po sapat ang 10 days , and once you are negative make sure practice safe sex

  25. Imme says:

Kung my exposure kau lahatin nu na std panel na kau, para sure, be safe always gamit nang protection.. godbless wag matakot mag pa test, for good health.

  31. Toolshot says:

    • Anne says:

Kailangang magpatreat ka nang maayos..thats so scary,i guess latent stage ka na..kahit na natreat kana hindi yan mawawala ang symptoms mo kasi nadamage na nang bacteria…if im not mistaken hindi na mawawala ang symtoms mo forever damage na yan…punta ka nang doctor mo etreat mo nang maayos..pag hindi mo yan etreat i swear may possible kang mablind, stroke,,nakaapekto yan sa heart natin and sa brain.

  33. dino says:

Ngatest po ako 1year and 1month from last possible infection, nonreactive po ako, that is my 4th test already, does it mean im negative talaga?

    • Dom says:

Parehas tayo 1 o 2 years ago last possible na exposure ko na nahawahan ako
Naka apat na din ako NR lahat. But still may anxiety pa din ako 😥 huuuh hirap 😥

      • Marx says:

pano ka “nahawahan” tapos NR? pki explain. Hehe…

        • Dom says:

Syempre may mga naka sex ako 1 o 2 years ago na unprotected lahat. Sina bi ko naman diba. “1or 2 years ago last posible exposure na nahawahan ako” di po ba malinaw yun?

          • Marx says:

hindi malinaw brad.. “nahawahan” ng ano? HIV?

      • Dom says:

Isa diagnotic center. 1 private hospital. 2 sa private hospital din pero free and with counselling.

      • Dom says:

NR nga po ang resulta. 4 na test NR lahat.

        • Dino says:

Bakit my anxiety kpa rin dom? Parehas tayo pero i just decided to accept kun meron man o wla, yung problema ko kasi is baka ibang STD at may affect fertility or other health porblems, ang hirap pg hindi malaman, nka pa HPv test na rin ako, pero nit fully yung std test, kahat ng std test sana ipapatest ko eh hindi ko rin alam kung ano yun hehe. Relax bro, enjoy life lang, iba nga nasagasaan patay agad, hehe
Pray lg lagi, yun na talaga ang he best

          • Marx says:

    • Marx says:

sa fujibio/3rd gen lng maipapayo ko… ang pinaka sure is 3months after last risky exposure…. the rest of the info, mag backread ka lng dito.

  35. Otap says:

Sir loyd possible ba na makita sa cbc test if hiv +?

  36. kon says:

    FRIENDLY REMINDER TO READERS

WALANG IBANG PARAAN PARA MALAMAN KUNG MAY HIV KA KUNG HINDI MAG HIV TEST.

  37. Anne says:

To marie..base sa nabasa ko very paint line is you recieve false possitive after 7 months of testing..magpaconfirm ka lang marie sa mga hiv testing.but im sure theres has no chance to get hiv…

    • FutureMD says:

A faint line could mean a positive result.

    • Anne says:

Makikita ang hiv sa pamamagitan nang blood testing…i have doubt sa urine test…mostly sa urine test ay etinetest nila yong UTI and drugs lang ..

  39. Rico says:

Llyod kaibigan aq ng cbc .result .rbc..4.76..MCV..91.50..MCH..32.70…RDW..12.70…WBC..5.34…MPV..14.50..ito lahat ng result niya ….HBsAg……nonreactive.. tanong ko lang negative ba cya sa HIV… thanks

  40. Rico says:

    • Anne says:

Iba ang test na gagawin sa hepa b and iba ang test na gagawin sa hiv..hindi natin sabihin na porquet negative sa hepa b ay negative sa hiv..yes pareha cla virus pero magkaiba cla..pero desame symtoms lang clang dalawa..talking about your cbc walang problema, normal lahat ang result..it means your healthy..and wag tayo magbase sa cbc..get tested right now..for peace of mind..

    • Tuli says:

Pero mababa po ung wbc which an indicator of hiv presence

      • kon says:

        anong proof mo?

saying these things doesn’t help. wala akong nabasang HIV test, therefore the status is UNKNOWN.

please, please, please people you want to help diba? then don’t say anything more than GET TESTED.

        @Rico

BUMALIK KA NG CLINIC tapos pa test ka for HIV AND DON’T COME BACK POSTING HERE hanggang di mo yan magawa.

        kakahighblood kayo haha

        • Tuli says:

Pa English English kapa kung talagang marunong kang magbSa alam mu dapat yan.

          • Tuli says:

          • Imme says:

D mo naman masabi kung hiv or wat. Dami kasi same na symtoms pero my tanong ako meron kaba exposure? It means my pumapatay sa wbc mo. Pag ganun.. doctor lng maka sabi if mag pa test or wat it you have an exposure wala naman masama amg pa test to make sure. 3months para comclusive ka..

  41. Marx says:

Praise God, NR po after alm0st 7weeks using fujibio. Antay ulit hanggang 3m0s and test using fujibio again. And m0st likely pa test din aq sa hi-prec b4 3m0s. Parang nabunotan po aq ng malaking tinik… 5wks to go… aja!

    • Anne says:

Hey..wag mong masyado papraning ang tao sa kakaisip..very faint…

Marie for peace of mind magpatest ka ulit and sabihin mo sa councilour mo..youve been tested using fujibo but theres have very faint line..just tell him /her that you paranoid about that..

Ps..Hiv test from DOH is very accurate test base sa nabasa ko..

  43. Lloyd says:

Guys wag ntin gawin basehan ang cbc or platelet na yan…gusto nyo ba sabihin kong naging positive ka kase tumaas or bumaba ang result ng particular test for cbc?mas prefer ko parin ang hiv test talaga at magkaiba un…go ahead and get tested and stop overthingking kase lalong magkakasakit kayo sa kakaisip…patest nlng po for hiv para hindi tayo nanghuhula at matigil na yang kakaisip nyo..KUNG POSITIVE KAYO SA TEST…HINDI YAN KATAPUSAN NG MUNDO
..tutulungan kayo ng govt to survive and live a normal life…tanggapin nalng para maging maluwag sa kalooban..mahirap pero kelangan mo pang mabuhay.

  44. much0 says:

  45. marie says:

    help please.

i tested 7mos after exposure and i had negative result however i am having dry mouth. and i tested again now using fujibio pa din. there is a very faint line sa C not even sure if it is a true result. very faint kasi and baka imagination ko lang to. i hope i can post a pic

    • Anne says:

Your hiv negative move on..yong very faint lines its negative…gaya lang kung nag p.t ka may very paint line..if you are hiv possitive that lines is not very faint..klarong klaro ang line..hindi very faint ang line..and klarong klaro ang line.kasi 7 months mo na since your last exposure.

    • Lloyd says:

Lukes

    • Tuli says:

Tru mo pakita ung pix ng test

    • kon says:

C line ba? that means walang line sa T area.

if what you said is 100% true and accurate then you are non reactive or you might have an INVALID test.

if i were you, I won’t be panicking and will just take another test kahit sa HP or sa social clinics. sayang 900 for an unnecessary test.

    • Lloyd says:

  46. Onis says:

Sir loyd my possibility ba na makita sa cbc if hiv+ ka?

    • Anne says:

Low platelets counts mostly are symptoms of hiv
Hight wbc count it means you have infection..the normal range of wbc is 4.5-11.0 ×10
Low RBC count it means you have anemia..
If you have abnormal result of cbc..get tested..test pa rin ang makapagsabi

    • Lloyd says:

  47. Bea says:

Hello. Nov 21 po possible exposure to hiv. Nagka fever n sore tgroat after 2 weeks, then colds. Pagkagaling ko nagka colds ulit ako n dry cough for 2 weeks now. Night sweats and back pain din at rash na d magkakadikit. Nung feb 18 nagpatest po ako n it was negative. Accurate na po kaya un? Til now may sumptoms parin po ako n sobrang anxious na po.

    • Bea says:

Pls help po sir lloyd. Gano po kaacurate ang sd bioline 12 weeks after exposure? Thanks po

    • FutureMD says:

Hello, Bea. 12 weeks test after exposure is already conclusive, according to the updated guidelines na sinusunod ngayon pagdating sa HIV testing. It’s the season of flu, so huwag agad agad mag assume na it’s HIV. Rashes can be due to stress or allergies. Night sweats din ay indicative of other illnesses, or pwedeng mainit lang talaga. If anxious ka pa rin sa result mo, have yourself tested again. Kapag negative pa rin, let the anxiety go and live your life fully but cautious from now on. God bless!

  48. Dheng says:
